A Common Endeavor: building unity in the Eugene-Springfield area

“What kind of community do we want to build together?”

As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the Bahá’ís of the United States have invited people everywhere to reflect on that question through a message called A Common Endeavor: Realizing the Promise of America.

Many people today are looking for ways to move beyond division, loneliness and conflict. They want stronger communities, deeper connections and a sense of hope for the future. The message encourages us to come together in friendship, have meaningful conversations, learn from one another and work side by side for the well-being of all. This nationwide response is, in turn, connected to efforts of Bahá’í communities around the world working to contribute to a more just and united society.

Here in Eugene and Springfield, Bahá’ís and their friends are exploring these ideas in simple, practical ways—through neighborhood gatherings, devotional meetings, study circles, service projects, and everyday conversations. This page shares local stories, experiences, and opportunities to participate as we learn together how unity, justice, and care for one another can find expression in community life.

Shared ideals

The message A Common Endeavor highlights several ways that longstanding American ideals align with principles found in the Bahá’í teachings.

Out of many, one
The national motto E Pluribus Unum (“Out of many, one”) reflects a foundational Bahá’í teaching: humanity is one family, enriched by its diversity.

Freedom of conscience
Just as Americans value religious freedom, Bahá’ís believe every person should investigate truth for themselves.

Working together
Both representative democracy and Bahá’í consultation emphasize listening, learning, and seeking solutions together.

Human dignity
The belief that all people are created equal is reflected in the Bahá’í commitment to the dignity of every person and the elimination of prejudice.

Small acts of friendship and meaningful conversation can make a difference. Together, we create communities where everyone is welcomed, valued, and able to contribute.

1) Reflect

Read the message on your own or with a small group to consider its themes about unity, community, and shared responsibility.

2) Converse

Talk with others about the ideas in the message and what they might mean for your neighborhood, workplace, or community life.

3) Serve

Put ideas into practice through small acts of service and learning with others, and see what helps strengthen community connections.
